Need a safe investment for 1 year. Ideas?
Posted on Dec 29, 2008 under investment |A friend of my parents' is about to sell her apartment, which means that she is going to end up with a decent chunk of change. (about $120,000)
It’s going to be at least a year before she’ll be able to decide what to do with the money long-term. It’s basically all of her retirement money, so she can’t put it into the stock market or mutual funds just yet. I was thinking that she should dump it into a CD for a year. Do you think there is something more interesting out there that will be just as safe? Please let me know. Thanks!!

Certificate of deposit, split it into two different banks…that way you get the FDIC insurance on the full amount…(the limit is 100K I believe per bank).

Get a high-yield CD for 12 months from two banks to get the maximum FDIC insurance coverage. I think you can get like 5% now on a 12 month.

cd ok but 1 yr treasury bond can get over 5% now & just as safe. Need a schwab acct & to get away from banks so you have better options. vegas_iwish@yahoo.com They also have banks all around country for cds if want that.

If you're firm on the timeline, I recommend CDs. Doesn't get any safer than that. If you have between 2-5 years, I recently looked into Life Settlement Investing… pretty safe with a fixed return. I won't bore you with the details, but you can look it up online. If you want, you can contact me and I'll share whatever info I have.
